Methie (or methi) is the term used in India for fenugreek. Methie lagan or Savoury fenugreek bake is a very tasty and easy to prepare appetizer, suitable for any occasion.


  • 12 x 3cm bunches of fenugreek (methie)
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 3 to 4 green chillies, chopped
  • 1 tsp ginger paste
  • (1/2) cup gram flour (chickpea flour)
  • Mehie Lagan 1 cup semolina
  • 1 Tbs sugar
  • 1 cup self-raising flour
  • 1 x 410g cream-style sweetcorn
  • 3/4 cup oil
  • 1 cup milk
  • salt to taste
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 Tbs fennel seeds

Savoury fenugreek bake

  1. Preheat oven to 180¬oC
  2. Pick the leaves, and discard stems and roots
  3. Rinse and drain well
  4. Place herbs with ingredients up to chickpea flour in a food processor and pulse a few times until blended
  5. Transfer mixture into a mixing bowl
  6. Whisk oil and milk together and stir in
  7. Add salt and baking powder, and mix well
  8. Pour into greased deep oven-proof tray
  9. Sprinkle fennel evenly over and bake for 40-45 minutes or until a skewer inserted comes out dry
  10. Allow to cool, then cut into small pieces
